"It's an Alta day today..."
That's what Alf Engen used to say about days like today. It was a full-on storm day, with "free refills," which is what happens when it's snowing so hard that your tracks are filled in between runs. Bottomless perfect powder, no lift lines - it was a recipe for fun! Here are some of Alta's shots of today's skiing:
Yes, it really was this deep today!

Bluebird!
How blue has the sky been at Alta the last week? So blue, it's hard to answer that question. Plus, the cold cold temperatures that we had a week ago are a distant memory - it's been in the 30s and even up to 40 the last few days! People are starting to get spring fever!
And the best part is that the snow is still holding up. High Greeley and the Noodle Run on Backside have been good, and of course we've all been getting our share of fun, fast groomers in. More snow is due at the end of the week, but to be honest, if it's not going to snow we'll take weather like this!

Happy 75th birthday Alta!
Tonight Alta Ski Lifts celebrated 75 years since the Collins lift first started running on January 15, 1939. On that day, a single ride cost 25 cents and an all day ticket was $1.25. Today, you can see several of the original single Collins chairs hanging at Alta - two next to the Goldminer's Daughter Lodge in the main parking lot, and two hanging next to the bottom of the new Collins chair.
The celebration tonight included a torchlight parade down Alf's High Rustler and fireworks. The number 75 was written out in torches at the top of High Rustler:

Bluebird days but more snow coming!
After a week of perfect bluebird skies, cold air, and soft (if not fresh) snow, there is finally another storm in the forecast! From Wasatch Snow Forecast we get this update today:
This is great news for Alta, since although the base we have has been skiing really well, we are all eager for more powder. This despite the fact that the high pressure we've had the last week or so has allowed Alta to open 100% of terrain for the first time this year. Devil's Castle opened first on Thursday, followed the next day by Baldy and then East Castle on Sunday. All skied well, and allowed us to have some fresh powder shots even though it hadn't snowed in a while.
This panoramic shot from the top of Baldy was posted on Alta's website... really phenomenal!
And this Pic of the Day is from January 4th. "Could the sky have been any more blue?"
"...the real storm that will drop good amounts of fresh snow... is coming in on Thursday. Another system could follow this one on Sunday, although there is still uncertainty with regard to the second system. Conservative first estimates for snowfall totals for the high Wasatch on Thursday and Friday is 6-16″. Might have to go higher as we approach the storm. It is a cold storm so valleys will see snow as well and ratios will be high so it will pile up quickly. Full update tonight..."
